Kacuncu Youth Club
Young People Leading the Way to Healthier, Stronger Communities
Who We Are
A youth club working for healthier homes, stronger livelihoods and a cleaner environment
Kacuncu Youth Club (KYC) was formed in 2011 in Bushenyi District, Uganda, after rapid school dropout and a close look at the health and poverty situation in rural communities. Our founders were convinced that when young people take part in community initiatives, such as health education, home hygiene, household incomes, keeping children in school and protecting the environment, communities gain better livelihoods and lasting health solutions.
Young people in Uganda face linked problems: low incomes, poor health care, HIV/AIDS, poor hygiene, malnutrition, limited access to affordable medicine, school dropout, environmental damage, and too little information and guidance. Rural health can’t improve without also addressing poverty and young people’s economic position, so our work brings health, livelihoods and the environment together. Our goal is a healthier community that protects its environment and takes part in reducing poverty, and in the long run, self-reliant, well-informed communities free from poverty.

Our Approach
We Work With Communities, Not Just for Them
We start with each community’s own needs, working hand in hand with local leaders.
We work closely with District Councils, District Community Development Officers, Local Councils and Village Councils to assess needs and shape our response. The youth groups we serve link us to action plans and services, so our programs reflect what communities actually need. Inside KYC, a General Assembly meets once a year to review completed activities and approve new plans. An elected executive committee guides the work and meets monthly, and technical working groups let members contribute in areas such as capacity building, home hygiene, HIV/AIDS prevention, resource mobilization and proposal writing.
We are guided by a commitment to growing knowledge of health rights in rural communities, empowering people at the grassroots to take part in their own development, taking a multicultural approach to environmental issues, and teamwork.
